It's been announced that face masks are now compulsory to wear in the UK whilst travelling on public transport, and in locations that can't adopt social distancing rules effectively.
People flouting the rules can face fines from the 15th June in a bid to reduce the spread of coronavirus.
As more people start to go back to work, transport secretary Gary Schapps has announced the new legislation, and said the rules will be strictly enforced. The policy comes amidst concerns that effective social distancing will be impossible to implement in the enclosed spaces on public transport. Other ways ministers are hoping to combat the virus spread is to encourage passengers to sit as far apart as possible, stagger their travelling times, and avoid travelling at peak times.
“As of Monday 15 June, face coverings will become mandatory on public transport,” Shapps told the daily press conference. “That doesn’t mean surgical masks, which we must keep for clinical settings, it means the kind of face covering you can easily make at home.
“The evidence suggests that wearing face coverings offers some, albeit limited, protection, against the spread of the virus.”
